I've just clinched another job. Re-arranging four songs from Kenneth's and Desmond's musical "Yum Sing", which will be made into a film, I think it's the one starring SY and Edric...?

I love being busy... sorry...

Post-show accolades

From Ken…

I cried during Lost In Transit. It was tears of sadness because I cared for Mia and her grandmother. I cried with sadness because it was the last day of Five Foot Broadway, and I had to say farewell to so many fine friends made during this production. But I also cried with tears of joy because Five Foot Broadway has succeeded beyond my wildest expectations.

And it is entirely due to all of you. Thanks to your dedication, your selflessness, your talents, your passion for musical theatre.... you have pulled off a minor miracle!

We started with nothing. Only an idea. We thought: “wouldn’t it be fun to create a bunch of new musicals?” We had no money, and for most of the time we received none. We were idealists. We did not know that it is impossible to create one musical with zero funding. So what did we do? We created five musicals.

We were idiots.

Each musical is very different in style, in their characters, in their stories. Each musical stretched the creative team and the performers to the maximum. Each musical contains the seeds of future greatness.

It was a difficult journey. I do not wish to downplay the difficulties and obstacles placed in our path. Managing creative and artistic people is probably one of the most challenging aspects of this project. We are all independent thinkers, spiced with an artistic temperament that is perfectionist and uncompromising. We were subjected to a barrage of criticisms. Some questioned our motives. A few failed to see or share our vision. Many a time we questioned our own sanity, and we wondered whether or not we should give up the entire project, and spend our time playing a gentle game of tennis
instead.

Why didn’t we give up? What drove us on? I guess it is because fundamentally we have faith in the goodness of people. We knew that even if we failed, it would not be for lack of trying. Most of you did believe in our vision and gave us constant support. That kept us going.

It is a journey of discovery. We discovered new talent. A lot of new talent, both young and old. We discovered a large pool of selfless and dedicated people who care for the arts. We discovered that Singaporeans are creative. But most important we discovered our inner self. We discovered our artistic soul.

We are family. Like in any family, we had our conflicts and our rivalries. But in the end we helped one another. We realize that united, we can achieve anything. Even the impossible. And that is exactly what we achieved. The impossible.

I have tried to thank each and every one of you individually. Without you we would never have made it. I thank you from the very deepest bottom of my heart.

As we depart, we look back at what we have achieved and the friends we have made. We look forward to a better future. A future of hope and optimism for the arts. A future where we discover ourselves. These are exciting times. We are literally writing the history of musical theatre in Singapore, in real time.

Finally, it is with tears of joy that I say goodbye for now, and hope that our paths will cross again in the future.

A big thank you to all of you!

Ken

From Lynn…

Hello one and all,

It's kinda sad, this is the last time I'm going to be sending out emails like this. SO, the entire thing is finally over, what're you feeling? I'm going through post production blues of sorts; I miss performance night especially.

Good show guys, I was peering down from the sound room and laughing and smiling to myself, I was really proud of y'all! And I was on such a high after that. I loved working with all of you and I think I wouldn't have had it any other way. Thank you for your work, for setting time aside to listen to me go on and on and for all the fun! I must say it was a very tiring period :)

Thank you HAWK for your place - a life saver, but a killer for those living in the East.Thank you August for the music and your, well, dramatic conducting. Thank you Ken for this chance. Thank you Andrew for listening to me and for all the encouragement. Thank you ALL for everything and making my directorial debut such a great one!

Oh gee, that's sounding like some weird 'thank you' speech. Ok, you guys take care and do keep in touch! What was I hearing about War of the Worlds yesterday Jerry?

I LOVE YOU ALL!!

Cheers, (for the last time)
Lynn

PS: It's kinda sad to think about it, but the boom baby boom email a/c's going to be derelict and all.

From Kevin…

Hi all, (Yo, I'm O)

The blues are kicking in now. =*(

Nevertheless it was such a GREAT experience working with you guys !! And this whole 'O' thing is stucked in my head. Grrr..

This musical has been a learning experience for myself and many whom had taken part for the first time. I can still remember the fun times we ACTUALLY bummed around, engaging in our nonsensical babble, and *ahem* ermm.. discussing about BREASTS & TITTS. ( ---> points to ROSS) Haha!! Throughout these 6 weeks of practices and rehearsals, it has been a trying time for some who had made drastic adjustments to their plans and schedules. But most certainly it was all worth it, considering the fact that we had the opportunity to work with and meet new people, forging new bonds, having a great time etc..

Someone (I can't remember who) quoted this during the reception, once you experience musicals, you just stop thinking about pop

Justin and myself are thinking of organizing a simple BBQ for the cast of DSID & BBB. We'll email you the details when the details are confirmed. But tentatively, it'll be about a couple of weeks from now. Say 4 or 5.

And I know some of you guys are pestering me for the photos we had taken. I'll compile all the photos I've taken and upload in some server for you guys to download or something. There'll be a full resolution set and a resized set. (DUDE ENGLISH DUDE) Anyway, I'll keep you guys inform when it's ready.

to lynn: hah. i didn't see that spastic side of you till the last day when you posed with your mouth opened with pasta still inside. haha. oops. it's fun working with you. and you're a great great director. heh.

to hawk: hi mr weapon, you loved my tight assets? haha. thanks for hospitality when you opened your place for our rehearsals. i love that studio house of yours. ha!

to ivan: your long hair is endearing. serious! and you're so funny in the show. dammit, i had to break into my secret laughter when you kept, umm.. swinging your *beep* back and forth after you had your cosmetic surgery done by the weapon and miss2. haha.

to jerry: you're funny and amicable. and i love that nerdy specs of yours man! all the best in your tvs and stuff!

to linda: hello my adultress wife! hahah. you're soo cutee... eeEEeee... you like to mess up my hair rite!? haha

to michelle: really enjoyed the times talking to ya, bummin around and getting together figuring out and playing to DSID's music. (remember the times when we had to strain our ears to catch what he was singing? hehe.. inside secret)

to ross: yo yo yo, you're ultimate funky girl! keep those jokes coming! and may u have a speedy recovery!!

to yasmin: hi sweet face! haha.. great acting !! heh

to siying: ohhh my dearie coco-krunch wifeee *muacks* ahaha.. had a great time being your husband. can eat toufu !!!wahahha.. kiddin!! glad to know you.hope to catch up with u sometime soon!

to ken: hi ken, thanks for giving me this opportunity to act and sing (*ahem* rap) in this musical. it was an awesome experiences and i hope to work with you should there be future musicals! no wonder they say that musicals can be addictive!

to andrew: hi drew, great script and nice CK jacket too. heh. you're hilarious and i like your tuxedo-bermuda outfit. freakin cool man. lolx

to august: you're the genius. i must crown you the title - monster behind that piano! you're fabulously talented and i hope to work with you next time. hope to do a personal demo album or something. i'll find you, so dun run! whaahha. was really fun talking to you. all the best and counting the days to ORD ! ha!!

So meanwhile, you guys stay cool ( Wit It ! ) and please add me in msn (using this address: blue_kelvinsg@hotmail.com ) if you have one. hope to hear from you all soon!!

tada..

-kevin 'O'

From Jerry…

Dear Peggy, Lynn, Swee San, Kenneth, Wanfu, Andrew & August,

Before all the pre-performance jitters/tension/cold sweat/etc start to kick in on Saturday, let me take this chance to say thanks for your patience and time. I know it must have been trying to get everyone together these last few weeks, just to rehearse alone!

And of course thanks to Paul for getting everything together, Hawk for letting us use your pad, Kenneth for the flow of drinks and Swee San for a between-rehearsals dinner (you missed out on that last one? Oops..!).

The experience of what it takes to breathe life onto pen and paper and watch a script come a life has always been a moving one for me.

And this is JUST a reading! :p

To the cast of Boom and Tales, break a leg. (Oops, sorry Ross!)

Hope you are better, SY.

Ciou,
Jerry

From Yasmin…

hello hello hello...

well, nearly everyone is emailing everybody else in the same ‘format’ but in their respective styles. in a way, I am pressurized to do the same, but come to think of it, I do have a lot of unsaid stuff to everyone. so, here goes:

to Andrew: danke for the Absolut Award. and in place of a statuette, you should just award me one of your most highly prized star wars figurines. hahaha. I think the mental image of you that I will take away, would be you in the boots and blazer combination. very you la darlinnnn.

to Ken: the bouquet was gorgeous and I was touched by that and the ‘thank you’ card and your patience with me and my songs. your dedication to the project is amazing and for that, I admire you (what with dividing time between rehearsals and your profession). you have instilled in me that genuine passion will not be sacrificed as long as it still lives.

to Lynn: babe...what can I say that you have not heard. look at us..from TSD, slogging our arses at gritty work and the A’s...and there we were not too long ago, working together under your direction and giving each other constant support. theatre lives. may you soar even higher in carlton, and when you appear on broadway, I’m going to the tabloids with our VJ class photo and tell them that I was your friend.

to August: I’m born in august, you know. irrelevant ah...i know. haha. i’m living for germany in august also. aiyo, irrelevant again. how you do it with the burden of army on your shoulders and the arranging of songs plus putting up with our fussy nonsense, I have no idea. I hope you realize your dream and when I hear you’re conducting in Victoria Theatre or the Esplanade, I’m gonna take one of our BBB photos and tell people that we once shared a cab home together and that I still owe you 2 dollars. (so do Lynn and Michelle! hahaha)

to Ross: wie gehts my dear?? marrrrvelous working with you, you know. and i think our best moment was with kevin at the window and you in the wheelchair and me acting as your daughter. ahahah! oscar moment la that one. no script some more and no frills! ok i digress, sorry dahling. dont take my rude comments about you in the wheelchair to heart. i was not myself and i was in character. hahah. and never force open a spoilt toilet door when people are changing inside! -mocks horror- :)

to Hawk: Hawk Liu!! i like calling you in full laaa. I thought you were very in your element when you were Weapon :) and let me see....bucking me from the back was very very wrong, but memorable. I hope when I come back in 3 yrs time, you’d still be willing to teach me salsa. oh and i tihnk every bachelor’s pad should resemble yours. ok, maybe with a bit more breeze la huh? :)

to Si Ying: the first phrase that pops in my head when I think of you is : she’s not the casual sex type. -chortles loudly- what I have not managed to tell you, is that I think you have a very unique voice, very lounge in a way. So if I hear that you’re singing in Fullerton Hotel, I’ll seize one of the BBB photos and demand the bartender at the hotel to give me a free drink and put it on your tab. hahahahha. Tschus meine Freundin.

to Kelvin: hello O. You are a talented person, I am sure, but one thing you can’t do well is...whisper! I hope the audience didnt hear your comments during the shows where you were leaning over to me and lynn and gushing about the girl with the CHIJ face. and I quote, you know, I swear that’s what you said. Let’s hope she doesnt have a boyfriend who sat so close to us that he heard you, then he will come and bash you up...ok I digress. :)

to Jerry: jerrrryyyyy! my sugar daddy! and I quote, you know, I swear, you said it so loudly on the train people stared at us! and no, I did not spread any rumour whatsoever! -grins confidentially- when I see you on TV, i’m gonna tell people I worked with you and that you have 3 cats. very weird of me, I know.

to Linda: too bad I didn’t get to know you better, but I think I’ve mentioned so many times how I liked your glasses. oh and to add to the list of ‘I like’s is your hair colour. and you were from VJ!!!!! hello fellow victorian! ok...before I lapse into our Yo VJC cheer.... :)

to Michelle: I agree with Ross: I do not see how bankers can look the way you do! And with Andrew for the Loreal Award...very deserving. Oh, and you know what I remember first about you? my audition...where lynn made us quarrel!! there lies a bitch hidden beneath michelle, people! beware!! haha. nah, you’re too nice -hugs-

to Ivan: i love your long long long long....hair. aha. but then, you already knew that. et une autre chose: tu parles francais, comme moi. alors, je prend l’opportunité d’exprimer quelques mots en francais pour m’amuser. et pour ceux qui font l’effort de traduire mes mots: tu serais déçu parce que je ne dis rien en particulière. :) muahahah.

And there you go. I wonder if you all will be able to remember me, should I return from Germany in 3 years’ time. How I wish I could work with everyone again, though acting is more my forte relative to singing. and I hereby raise my bottle of vodka and say cheers to BBB.

in a drunken stupor, with much love, yasssssmin aka misssss 2.

p.s: my oscar-puking-moment never happened. pffft.

I feel terribly bored today.

No more FIVE-FOOT BROADWAY.

No more REHEARSALS

No more LATE NIGHTS ARRANGING MUSIC ON MY COM

No more PLAYING THE PIANO WITH PEOPLE SINGING ALONG

No more TRIPS TO F&B OUTLETS WITH THE CAST

No more TRIPS TO PLAY DEN AT THE ART HOUSE

No more SLACKING IN THE GREEN ROOM

No more FOOLING AROUND IN THE ORCHESTRA PIT... (you call that a pit!? It's not even below the ground... okay, let's just call it the ORCHESTRA CORNER)

Back to being a soldier. Doing sai kang.

I'm lounging around the house, playing CDs, clearing up my room which I have messed up during the duration of working the FFB scores. No time for general maintenance during the period. But I like my place messy... I seem to work better... when it's tidy, something seems to be amiss...

Now this is even messier... the other side of the orchestra pit, where we dump our bags and instrument cases. Oops, we flouted a rule... not supposed to bring drinks in (except water). Well, the rule of thumb: do anything BUT DON'T GET CAUGHT!!!

Our orchestra pit. On the left you can see the feedback monitor, and the MIDI module on top of it. That's my bedside table lamp you see there, with the smiley face sticker (which can't be seen from here). Amazingly the bulb didn't blow for the three nights. Thank goodness, because the lamp AND the bulb are pretty old. That's our keyboard, pretty good range, scripts for Heartstrings (HS) and Don't Say I Do (DSID) are on top. The microphone in the background is for Sean to sing in HS and Kelvin to amplify his guitar in DSID, the music stand is for Michelle to put her scores when she's playing the flute. The extra yellow chair is for cast members who got tickets but want to sit with us during the show. It's a cosy corner. Love hanging out here for the three days.

Hi everyone...

Apologies... Five-Foot Broadway tickets are seriously limited... you can still call in to place orders for your tickets but you will be placed on a waiting list. Surprisingly the response has been pretty good... anyway we should be re-staging it in the later part of the year at a 400-seater theatre.

Thanks everyone for your support! :)
